Santa Barbara is my home. I was born at Cottage Hospital, and grew up here attending local public schools. After earning my Master’s and starting my career in Washington DC, I came back home and now live in Hidden Valley with my partner, Hannah, blocks away from the house I lived in as a toddler and around the corner from my family.

As a college student I worked the floor of a small restaurant on State Street and as a tour guide, showing visitors our waterfront, nature trails, and historic downtown. I loved meeting new people from around the world and watching them fall in love with this place the way I always have.

After graduating from San Marcos High School, I followed my passion for public service to Washington, DC, where I earned a Bachelor's in Political Science and a Master of Professional Studies in Political Management at The George Washington University.

Meet Ian:

I served as an American Rescue Plan Fellow with the National Association of Counties, where I helped local governments across the country access and strategically deploy federal pandemic recovery funding to support their communities. Working through that process with dozens of counties gave me experience navigating the layers of bureaucracy, and a profound appreciation for just how critical the work of local government is to our daily lives.

Today, I work for California State Senate Pro Tempore Monique Limón in policy areas like childcare, healthcare, housing, and transportation. I help constituents navigate state agencies every day, work that has sharpened my ability to cut through red tape and get results for the people I serve.

In 2021 the City Council appointed me to Santa Barbara's Transportation and Circulation Committee, where I now serve as the Committee’s Chair. In that role, I review millions of dollars of our City’s capital budgets, grant applications, and public works projects. I have championed projects like the Safe Streets for All Action Plan, the Modoc multi-use path extension, and safety improvements to Las Positas and Cliff Drive. I have also been a vocal advocate for the State Street that our community deserves in both Uptown and Downtown. As the Chair, I approach this work from a safety-first perspective, because I remember what it was like growing up and not having safe walking paths in my neighborhood.

My work on the Transportation and Circulation Committee has also given me a clear appreciation for how intertwined our housing crisis is with the transportation impacts we feel. Housing affordability is everyone's problem. A city only works when teachers, firefighters, and city workers can afford to live in the community they serve. I believe in smart, sustainable planning that protects what makes Santa Barbara feel like Santa Barbara and provides for the people who live here. On the City Council, I will work to implement protections for renters, simplify City bureaucracy for homeowners, small businesses, and non-profits, and I will make investments in the affordable workforce housing our community needs.

I am running for City Council because we need a local Councilmember who truly understands our City and brings the experience in government to deliver on day one. I have spent years advocating for our community and helping people navigate every level of government, including City Hall. Now, I am ready to give back and put that experience to work for my hometown which has given me so much. I look forward to meeting you and learning your Santa Barbara story. I would be honored to earn your vote on November 3rd.
